cyberpunk i ▶ Though it may not have always been the case, "high-tech low-life" certainly goes a long way in summarizing Joseph's general way of life. Once a rich heir second-in-line to a sizable mega corporation, an unfortunate incident perpetrated at the Joestar family home left Joseph gravely injured, and both he and his older brother, Jonathan, homeless at a very young age. What money their father had tried to send them away with was promptly scammed from them by a shifty street-doc for medical attention and a bottom-of-the-line cyberware prosthetic for Joseph's missing arm. His childhood surviving with Jonathan fostered in him a close bond and respect for his brother, and an enduringly passionate interest in the relationship between man and machine. To pay the rent and keep food on the table, Joseph bounces from contract to underpaid contract, and supplements his meager income with a variety of illicit criminal activity. When he's not working, Joseph splits his free time between his true passions - his many, many pet projects, all of dubious legality and safety, and tinkering new upgrades into his arm and cyberware-compatible bike. His projects have caught the attention of Kars, a disgraced biogeneticist, ousted from the scientific community after being embroiled in national scandal that saw to light his immoral and inhumane practices, which cost the life of multiple employees. He was raised by his grandmother, an exiled scribe of the Brotherhood of Steel, and Speedwagon, an old prototype of Synth and among the first to escape the Institute's claws and emerge to the Wastes. Growing up in the Switchboard, Joseph was raised on stories of his field agent parents and his ex-Paladin grandfather, Jonathan Joestar. By his parentage and emerging excellence in the arts of deception and charisma, Joseph was set on the same path as his parents - until a massacre carried out on the Switchboard by the Institute's hands changed his trajectory permanently. The sudden shortage of men of science and medicine in the Railroad's ranks saw Joseph funneled through medical training and put in charge of a tiny settlement called Sterling - a cover for Railroad operations, with Joseph at the helm as doctor, psychologist, protector, and brain surgeon - something that he copes with by employing a very strict and careful regimen of acuity-inducing Mentats tempered by periodic binges on Addictol. Underneath his flippancy and casual demeanor, Joseph is absolutely dedicated to the cause of finding displaced Synths a place in the above-ground world, and remains even moreso after his first and recent brush with failure. Joseph pledges himself fully to the cause of freeing the indentured slaves of the Institute, until a botched job on Synth C0-87 pulls him from his twelve-strong settlement and into the Commonwealth.
